FEATURES AND SPECIFICATIONS

Common to All South Texas Woodmill, Inc., Casework


  1. All door and drawer fronts are of "reveal overlay" design, providing neat, clean lines, uniform margins and uncluttered appearance. (Door and drawer fronts are easily changed out if damaged in use.) 3/4" thick.

  2. All case body units are accurately machined with dowel for positive positioning. Joints are assembled with large air clamps with glue. Mechanical fasteners will be used when necessary. See section for thickness.

  3. All case module backs are 3/8" in Educational Casework and 1/4" in Laboratory Casework (except two - faced cases are 3/4") set in a continuous rabbet and glued and pointed square, with 3/4" x 4- 1/4" horizontal back cleats tops and bottom of all units for secure anchoring Tall modules have intermediate horizontal back cleats as well. All wall-hung have a continuous glue bead at all back to side joints.

  4. All sub-bases are furnished unfinished, and are attached to modules ready to receive finished base material as dictated by room-finish schedule. Sub-bases are constructed of 3/4" exterior grade plywood with accurately machined and rigidly assembled joints. Sub-base extend partly under module sides to be sure of positive weight transfer to the floor. Sides extend to floor upon request and on tall units.

  5. All drawer bodies are "box-type" with separate screw-attached drawer fronts. Drawer bodies are of 1/2" thick 9 ply Birch plywood, plywood with cabinet liner or 1/2 MDF with melamine accurately machined for dowel construction with continuous plow for 1/4" bottom. Drawer bodies are rigidly assembled in air clamps with dowels, glue bond and pinned. Bottom is held fast in place by hot melt glue beads. Additional bottom braces are used on drawers over 24" wide, if 9 ply Birch all components are sealed and varnished.

  6. Drawer suspension system is comprised of mechanical slides with nylon rollers and ball bearings. Guides have extended load capacity of 75 lbs. All file drawers have full extension mechanisms, extended wood capacity of 100 lbs. Large lateral hanging file to have 150 lbs slides.

  7. Adjustable shelves are supported on 32mm pins, double pm captive nylon supports on library shelves or recessed bright-zinc metal ratchet strips providing for 1/2" vertical adjustments. Shelves rest on 9/16" x 3/4" bright-zinc, metal clip-type seats, which are readily moved for re-positioning shelves. All adjustable shelves are reversible. Adjustable shelves to 36" are 3/4" thick and 1" thick for 37" or longer.

  8. Door Hinges: Woodmill offers two hinge options.

    1. Option A - (Commonly referred to as the European-type) This hinge is fully concealed when the door is closed. This hinge is all metal, nickel-plated, self-closing, door leaf hinge boss seated in hole drilled in back of door and held in place by two screws through boss anchor strap. Cabinet member of  hinge seats on ser rated plate which allows for infinite accurate adjustment and secure seat. Each hinge is held with a total of five screws. Two hinges-per-door to36" high, three hinges-per-door 37” to 60" high and four hinges-per-door for 61" to 84". This hinge allows a 120 degree swing, (170 degree upon request).

    2. Option B - Five knuckle, tight-pin hospital-tip hinge .074 gauge, wrought steel with satin chrome or black finish. Hinge length is 2 1/2", interlocking leaves of double wrap-around shape, secured by eight screws per hinge, hinge action is 270 degree. Uses two-per-door to 36" high and three-per-door for  36" to 80".

  9. Door and/or drawer pulls: (drawers 30" and wider have two pulls each).

    Metal, die-cast, hair pin-type, satin chrome finish, 3-1/2" screw centers and 1" projection.

    Sliding doors: Semi-recessed, plastic pull, either black or putty color, 4-1/2" long overall with 3/8" projection.

  10. Catches: Roller type aluminum case or double magnetic catch when required.

  11. Locks: Standard locks furnished by South Texas Woodmill have removable core and may be specified as:

    1. Keyed alike

    2. Keyed different

    3. Master keyed

    Any lock or locks to be master keyed to a building system should be scheduled and furnished under the Hardware Section of the specifications.

    1. Hinged doors and drawers - cam lock

    2. Sliding doors 3/4" thick - cam lock

    3. Sliding glass door 1/4" thick

    4. Ratchet type- Bright chrome finish.

  12. Sliding door hardware: For 1/4" and 3/4" thick solid doors, anodized aluminum channel track guide. Recessed  finger-type pulls with stain-chrome finish or semi-recessed black plastic pulls described in Section 9 above. For 1/4" thick plate glass doors, anodized extruded aluminum channel track and guide with fiber inserts. Pulls to be finger-type applied to face of glass.

  13. Clothes rod: 1-1/16" diameter steel rod, bright nickel plated with end supports.

  14. Tote trays: High impact polystyrene, with or without label holder. Standard color is beige. Size as required by cabinet dimensions. Tray suspension is 1/4" hardboard shelves.

  15. Coat hooks: Die cast aluminum, burnished and machine polished.

  16. Mirrors: 1/8" thick mirror tile, held in place with plastic clips.

  17. Tackboard: 1/2" homosote fiberboard, covered with heavy - gauge vinyl, edge­ wrapped.

  18. Chalkboard: Single-ply hard board with high-baked finish.

  19. Casters:

    1. Swivel - type - 4" diameter wheels of soft or hard rubber and  self-lube wheel bearing. Swivel is double-level, hardened ball bearing. All  metal surfaces are zinc-plated.

    2. Rigid - type - 4" diameter wheel of soft or hard rubber, held in horns of formed steel, zinc-plated. Wheel spanner bushings. Load capacity: 255 lbs per caster. Brake available on both swivel and rigid.

  20. Metal legs : 1" square tubular steel, degreased, prime coated and spray finished with enamel paint Standard color is black; chrome is available. Each leg equipped with nylon shoe and stem-type leveler, with tops anchor plates or supports as required by use. Metal legs should be shown by plans.

  21. Wood and/or plastic-clad legs: 2-1/2" of square material matching casework, concealed metal comer brace and anchor, black plastic boots.

  22. Glass:

    1. For framed glass panel doors - 1/4" polished plate.

    2. For full glass doors - 1/4" polished plate, scanted edges, applied pulls.

    3. Note Laminated safety or tempered glass may be substituted for polished plate at extra cost and must be specified.

  23. Top Work Surfaces:

    A.  Plastic Laminate Materials

    1. General purpose grade per latest NEMA Standards for GP 50 and/or forming grade.

    2. Other plastic laminate such as "Tuf-Surf', "Chem-Surf' and "Color Core" also are available and must be specified.

    3. All plastic laminate tops will have a .030 backer.

    4. All exposed edges are to be self-edged with matching laminate.

    B.  Laminate Sub-strates for Tops

    1. 45-lb. Medium density, mat-formed particle board per latest NPA Grade 1-M-3 (3/4" thick) with built-up edge where thicker show edges are required.

    2. Other available - must be specified

      a. Medium density fiberboard.

      b. Close-grain, hardwood plywood such as Birch.

      c. Exterior-grade plywood.

      d. Thickness variations more than 3/4" for sub-strates must be specified.

    C.  Wood

    1. Northern Hard Maple, glued edge grain butcher block pattern, unfinished.

    2. Other available - must be specified.

      a. Red Oak

      b. White Oak

      c. Mahogany

      d. Yellow Pine

    D.  Special Laboratory Tops

    1. Modified epoxy resin molded from specially compounded materials containing no asbestos, oven-cured for optimum physical and chemical resistant properties. Epoxy accessories (sinks, reagent shelves, racks) also available. Color is black. Gray and beige upon request. Acrylic polymer tops such as Corian and Gibraltar upon request.

    E.  Metal Tops

    1. Stainless steel, 16 or 18 gauge, Type 302 or 304. Reinforced and sound deadened. Must be defined by specifications.

    2. Galvanized sheet metal, 16-gauge, must be specified.

  24. Card Catalog File Drawers:

    1. Drawer body injection-molded plastic, for applied front.

    2. Follower block and ratchet strip, zinc-plated metal.

    3. Ferrule-type rod holder, pressure release for rod removal.

    4. Aluminum knobbed follower rod of 3/16" diameter steel.

    5. Aluminum card holder with bail-type pull.

    6. Fronts made to match casework series.
